Working Away from Home | Florence

As some of you may know, I've been working away from home quite a lot recently & it's all thanks to Base Childrenswear!

I'll tell you a little bit about my background there as I often get asked how I became a buyer and what were my previous experiences. I've been working for Base for about 4 years now - where has that time gone?! - I actually started off working in the stores just as my part time job whilst I was studying at the FRA. I worked between 3 stores and as I always found myself covering for people or filling in a space during the busy seasons.

When I graduated from college last year, I was asked to go to Base head office for a full-time job there. Of course I was delighted as I could start earning a decent wage! So this is where you may be shocked ... I started off working in the warehouse. Unloading lorries, carrying cardboard boxes and arranging the deliveries for stores. I then went onto the online and dispatch department just to help out over christmas because as you can imagine, it was soo busy! Then in January I was asked to become the Assistant Buyer and I couldn't be any happier now!

So that leads me onto telling you all about my first business trip away with Base Childrenswear!

Just to fill you in, Base is a company which sells designer childrenswear clothing. So we stock brands such as Moncler, Gucci, Versace and many many more! Needless to say that I can fit into some of the girls clothes - A whole lot cheaper than the adults!

As a buyer, you'll always find yourself going to trade shows or looking around at what your competitors are doing. In the designer childrenswear industry, The Pitti Exhibition is a done thing! It's held in Florence every 6 months and it's where a lot of brands and companies come together to create new relationships and business for each other.

We flew out there about 2 weeks back on the Wednesday evening and arrived at hotel early hours of the morning. Around 9am we - myself, another buyer and the owner of Base - went onto the exhibition. I cannot explain how hot it was out there too! 35 degrees was surely good enough for me!

The whole day revolved around going into different stalls and seeing what each collection was all about. In the past I went to a trade show which literally had nothing on this! The whole exhibition was decorated throughout and represented each brand's identity so well!

We picked up plenty of new contacts which we will contact regarding their SS17 collection so make sure you keep a look out for those!

After the exhibition, we headed back to our rooms to freshen up for dinner - well not me as such - I stayed out and walked around the City of Florence snapping away on my camera. After all, it was my first business trip, I had never been to Italy before and wanted to see what it was all about. Considering we stayed so close to the Piazza Del Duomo, I had to go and have a look around the cathedral as it's a huge landmark in Florence.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to eat a real Italian pizza! People who know me will know that pizza is literally my life, I don't know what I would do without it! So of course we went to an Italian al fresco restaurant which looked over the square - so cute

The guys then took me to see Ponte Vecchio. I literally had no words. The most stunning landmark I had seen! I told Sam I would have to take him there as it's so romantic especially when the sun is setting. Ponte Vecchio is a bridge in Italy which is famous for having the best jewellery shops all lined up. There were guitarists and men singing on the bridge with a few couples just dancing in front of them - Such an amazing atmosphere - I can't wait to go back already

Building contacts and relationships is always good as we were then invited to one of our brands 25th birthday! - could this trip get any better?! - It was situated in a rooftop terrace which overlooked the City of Florence and Ponte Vecchio. After having a few drinks, we then went back to our hotel as we had to prepare for a flight home the next day.

I can't begin to explain how grateful I am to have been on my first business trip at the age of 19! Florence was the most amazing city with so much character and history behind it. I'm sure, when people go there for a holiday there's so much to do! Maybe one day I'll be able to experience that side of Florence.

The following week I flew out to Milan for two meetings with very top end brands. Make sure you keep a look out for it as I'll be posting a blog about it soon!
